Thank-You Letters from Residents

Being a Councillor is often a tough job, because you can’t please everyone!

However, each day I am encouraged by those who share their thanks and appreciation.

Here are a few samples of notes I have received recently. I am truly thankful to people who take the time to share their thanks and encouragement.

Re: Letter of Support for Blair Lancaster

"To whom it may concern:

I am delighted and honoured to provide this letter of support for Blair Lancaster for the Governor General’s Persons Award.

I know Blair through her work with the City of Burlington’s Inclusivity Advisory Committee as I am the Chair of that committee. In this role I personally refer to Blair as a “Champ” as she is a dedicated, passionate and an active participant on our committee. Her insight and guidance have been invaluable to our work. At each meeting Blair continuously contributes her ideas for making our community more inclusive. For example, she has personally led the way on language barrier projects, emphasizing that the city use inclusive photos and language and that documents are always accessible to the members of our changing demographics.

Five years ago while on our committee, Blair helped to develop an Inclusivity Lens to be used by the City of Burlington staff when reviewing and delivering the City’s programs and services to ensure the city is a welcoming environment for all. I have personal experience training City staff using this tool and I am excited with the success of the training and coming results. Blair has been a champion to see this project through.

Each year our Inclusivity Advisory Committee has been a proud participant in a festival that Blair organizes for our community in her role as a Councillor. This festival is called Love My Hood and is meant to encourage people of all different origins and cultures to get together sharing food, play and music. This event brings our diverse community together, breaking down barriers between neighbours and creating opportunities for friendships. It is especially helpful to bring immigrant women out into the community, exposing them to new social opportunities in Canada and making them much more comfortable with their government.

In my experience, Blair Lancaster looks at the world through the lenses of inclusivity, diversity and equity and her actions reflect that point of view. Burlington has changed very much in the over 40 years that I have been a resident here. Blair is hard at work ensuring that our City government and staff meet the challenges of our new reality. I have every confidence that Blair Lancaster is a most deserving recipient of the Governor General’s Persons award.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Brian W."

“I have had the pleasure of working with Councillor Lancaster with respect to planning and development issues within her ward.

I have found that she possesses a unique skillset that delivers on Burlington’s city- building objectives, while ensuring that her residents' issues are being full respected and addressed.

This consensus building leadership style is an essential quality in today’s complex municipal environment where growth and development issues are affecting the quality of lives of residents but also forging a prosperous economic future for the City. I believe that Councillor Lancaster has an exceptional ability to lead municipal politics in this exciting period of change in the City of Burlington.

"Hi Blair,

Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to spend the day with you for job shadowing. I was able to achieve my objective for the day, which was to gain an in-depth understanding of municipal government. I enjoyed attending the regional meeting and also the tour of the office that you gave me. Most importantly, I thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

It was certainly a great experience.

Kind regards,
Crystal L."

Thank you Re: Repair and Assistance

"Dear Blair and Rebecca:

I really appreciate you answering my questions, finding out all the information and meeting with me yesterday.

This the first time that I have ever met with my city councillor and assistant and you were so understanding, helpful, and made the experience a positive one. I finally felt someone understood my position and what I am currently going through...

Thanks again.
Beverley"

"Hello Councilor Lancaster,

I am sorry I could not stay at the Budget Committee meeting on Tuesday to learn of Council's valued input on both the school disposition criteria and General Brock issue. I definitely wanted to but could not be in two places at once.

I did just watch the full meeting via webcast and doing so inspired this email.

I just wanted to say that I believe you hit the nail on the head with your succinct, insightful comments. Recognizing that the 6 + acres of lands at General Brock is slated for development, supporting a proactive process opportunity versus a reactive one is what I was trying to convey.....in my long-winded way (I need to improve on that:))

Thank you for your valued role in offering this clarity thereby helping to advance a go forward next step.

Kind regards,
Amy"

"Blair,

your immediate reply and response to my concerns pertaining to the pedestrian crosswalk have been exemplary.

Your actions and the City Of Burlingtons conduct in this matter continues to reinforce why my daughters and I so strongly embrace our extraordinary community.

Thank you.
John"

"I would like to personally extend my appreciation to Councillor Lancaster for taking the time to respond to our students.

We are thrilled about her interest and her willingness to honour their hard work with a detailed response, links to more information, and an invitation to join in community work.

This is a wonderful, real-world experience for our students and I am sure they will take advantage of some of the recommendations.

With sincere appreciation,
Carolyn"

"On behalf of Board Chair Nancy Douglas, the entire Library Board, Staff and Management please accept our warm thanks for participating in the grand launch of Burlington’s first public Makerspace at Central Library yesterday.

As we mentioned at the event, Burlington Public Library Board and Management is most appreciative of the strong support we enjoy from the Mayor and City Council. It is our intent to evolve our library services as our community changes.

We realize that your days are busy and you receive many invitations to participate in community events. Rick, we appreciate that you spent part of your birthday with us. John, thank you for attending even though you were not feeling well. Blair, thank you for your continued active support, not only at Central, but also in keeping the community informed about the recent Alton Branch water damage situation and other issues.

I hope you all enjoyed the event and the opportunity to explore the learning opportunities we have created. Library staff are committed to exploiting innovative ways to serve our community.

We are excited at the potential for discovery our community will enjoy in Ideaworks Studio.

Your support for the library and our evolution as a 21st century learning space is most appreciated.

Best regards,
Maureen Barry"

Hi Blair, my name is Annie and I am one of the admins of the Alton village community forum and myself and the other admin Adam have a neighbourhood concern we wanted to bring up to you, but first...

We have been meaning to message you for a while now. We just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work, for being a part of the forum and for being so involved and active on it. We have noticed you always reply to people in the group and investigate their concerns and we both feel like you are doing an excellent job as our ward counsellor. We always speak very highly of you when you name comes up!

On a different note... A couple of years ago now, I emailed you about requesting more garbage cans at our local parks and you successfully placed numerous garbage cans in and around the ponds behind Wal-Mart, thank you for this.

I really appreciate it, we use those garbage cans often and although sometimes there is still quite a bit of litter in the park, I do believe those cans have made a HUGE difference.

Anyways, since we spoke last I have had a baby and now our family frequently goes to the other park across from Haber community centre (Norton park) and I have noticed that there are no garbage cans at all on the east side of the park. I think getting at least one (if not 2 or 3) would be very beneficial to the park.

Personally, I think if I could only choose one, the best location for it would be at Jenn avenue at the catwalk (bridge) into the park. I often notice garbage piles up there because people expect to see one there and when they don't they just throw their garbage down. Anyways, Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Thank you! 🙂

Re: Chamber Young Professionals

"Hello Blair

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come to Hamilton to present to our young professionals.  It was an excellent (and timely) presentation.  The group learned a lot and we had great discussion afterwards.  Plus, it gave us a chance to collaborate with Burlington's young professionals.

If there are any future opportunities we can collaborate again please do not hesitate to contact me!  In the meantime, I look forward to learning more about city planning at my next Mayor's Advisory Committee meeting.

Have a happy Sunday!
Freda"

"Blair,

Just wanted to thank you again!
Barb called me from RPM and what an absolute pleasure. She explained and I completely understand.

Most unfortunate that we can’t enjoy the greenery over the summer months or have planting done earlier, but such is life. Thank you again! Burlington is blessed to have such amazing representatives acting on our behalf.

In gratitude,
Krystyna"

Re: Burlington Green

Dear Mayor Goldring, Councillors and City Staff,

On behalf of BurlingtonGreen, I would like to thank you once again for the opportunity to delegate to the Committee of the Whole on Monday to share BurlingtonGreen’s position on the Roseland Pilot Private Property Tree By-Law, and more generally, on our support for expanding this by-law to make it City-wide.

We are thrilled that the majority of Council voted in favour of the Roseland pilot, and also voted to support the initiation of a community consultation process to consider the implementation of a City-wide private property tree by-law. These decisions align with Burlington’s Grow Bold mandate as well as the City’s Blue Dot commitment and Strategic Plan. Thank you for this demonstration of future-thinking leadership.

We also want to express our appreciation for the time spent by City staff to compile their report, and are grateful for their willingness to support the implementation of the Roseland pilot and the engagement of the community to discuss a more broadly applied by-law.

Recognizing the challenges staff face in applying finite resources to managing these processes while also dealing with the Emerald Ash Borer problem and the important task of developing a new Urban Forest Management Plan as soon as possible, BurlingtonGreen would like to offer our assistance in supporting the City to connect with the community, solicit citizen engagement and generate informed conversation about Burlington’s valuable trees.

In the spirit of our ongoing partnership with the City on a number of fronts, we stand ready to help and look forward to moving these exciting projects forward to make Burlington a healthy and greener city.

Sincerely,
Jane Jenner
Member, BurlingtonGreen Advocacy Team

Re: So Appreciative!

"GOOD MORNING

A COUPLE YEARS AGO I CALLED AND GAVE MY THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL JOB BEING DONE ON APPLEBY LINE (AND OTHER ROADS IN NORTH BURLINGTON) FOR:

1. SNOW REMOVAL DONE WELL AND IN A TIMELY FASHION

2. WHAT I BELIEVE IS LIQUID CALCIUM PUT ON THE ROADS NORTH
OF THE HWY 407

WITH OUR HILLS AND CURVES, ADDING THIS LIQUID CALCIUM HAS CHANGED THINGS SO MUCH FOR US IN NORTH BURLINGTON MAKING OUR ROADS SO MUCH SAFER IN SNOWY AND ICY CONDITIONS.

I IMAGINE THIS IS COSTLY TO ADMINISTER, HOWEVER I BELIEVE IT HAS CUT ACCIDENTS BY A VERY HIGH PERCENTAGE - MOST ESPECIALLY IN AREAS OF HILLS SUCH AS AT BRONTE CREEK AND NEAR CAMP SIDRABENE. COST HAS PROBABLY THUS BEEN CUT FOR REPAIRING GUARDRAILS DAMAGED IN ACCIDENTS SO THIS IS A BONUS BOTH FOR SAFETY AS WELL AS REPAIR.

AS A SENIOR LIVING IN NORTH BURLINGTON SINCE 1982, THE LAST FEW YEARS OF SAFER DRIVING CONDITIONS IN WINTER HAS BEEN TRULY WONDERFUL DUE TO CITY SNOW MAINTENANCE....SO I FELT IT WAS TIME TO ONCE AGAIN CONVEY MY APPRECIATION.

THANKS SO MUCH.....VERY, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED BY ALL OF US WHO LIVE UP HERE.

CHEERS AND HAVE A GREAT DAY WITH 'NO WORRIES' -
DIANE"

Re: Tree Bylaw

"Thank you for your plain spoken yet inspiring comments during tonight's meeting. You clearly are able to see the bigger picture and I think your remarks moved the discussion forward when it was stalling.

I would like to see a City wide by-law put in place.

Thank you again,
Diane"

Thank you again for taking care of this.

Re: Speaking Engagement Unwed Moms

"Blair,

Wow - You were amazing today – thank you so much – what a great story, what great lessons, honestly, those dear moms at Shifra have no idea how blessed they were to hear what you all told them today.

Praying too that they hang on to your very clear word on “we overcome our past, right ??”

beautiful, just beautiful – keep on sharing !

So glad to be back in touch with you Blair, I’ll try to help you out best I can in your important work,

With thanks -- Lorna"

"Blair...

I just wanted to send you a little note to say thank you so much for keeping us all so very updated in Alton and for working so hard on our behalf. I’m sure you’ve seen the sentiment on facebook is rather angry at the moment but I want you to know that there are many of us not commenting that certainly don’t feel that way (but also don’t feel like arguing it on social media)...

I can only imagine how difficult your job can be at times in efforts to keep everyone happy and informed and to do your job within the parameters it also offers you. I’ve watched you in meetings conduct yourself with such grace and poise and yet a remarkably strong hand and voice and I have always been impressed at the amount of respect you give to others, even when their approach towards you is less than I would consider professional. I’ve seen you do it time and time again and I have learned from you in the process.

Laura and I both feel grateful for your representation in our community. We are blessed to have you. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter weekend and that you get some well deserved time off!

Take care,
Andrea"

Re: Anti Bullying Task Force

"Good Morning Councillor Lancaster,

I read your memo regarding a task force in the Feb 5 COW meeting agenda.

Both past and recent events have caused uncertainty as to what opinions are appropriate and how to engage with our city. This has lead to a divisive, confusing and uncomfortable environment, undermines the public engagement process and causes mistrust in our municipal government.

Thank you for bringing your initiative to council. This is likely the most important issue facing our city and if we are to restore the decorum that has been lost in recent times, an absolute must for everyone, staff, council and residents.

Cheers,
John"

Re: Debris Picked up - One Side Road

"Thank you both for meeting with me last Thursday afternoon. I felt the concerns of our petition group that I represented in our meeting were truly listened to.

I left confident that when the report comes out that Councillor Lancaster will give all aspects of the issue careful consideration. I also appreciate the guidance you shared with me regarding our future presentation to the Committee as a Whole.

Thank you Julie for sending the link to the city page regarding delegations.

Re: Sports Fields

"Councillors and Mayor Goldring,

I wanted to express my appreciation for this first step in the process to improve the standards of grass fields in Burlington. As a primary user of Class A grass fields this shows our membership that our opinions matter to the members of our City Council.

We hope this will make our City an even more attractive place to grow and play for years to come. We look forward to seeing the results of your hard work.

"Dear Blair,

I was just sitting at my computer to take the time to thank you all for the quick action when I saw your email! You certainly understand customer service, and I am very impressed.

I moved in Burlington in 1993, and never had to complain about anything. This region and the city of Burlington are well managed, and I feel my taxes are well spent J ( if we forget the pier, but that’s in the past now, and I don’t really blame the city, but the consulting engineer who created the mess to start with…). The swift response of both the city and the Region following the 2014 flood really impressed me too!

Again thank you very much for your appreciated diligence in addressing this case.

Have a good long weekend!
Bernard"

"Hello Blair,

Just a quick e-mail to extend our thanks for your support of the residents of Twin Oaks and Greenbough in the on-going discussions of changes to the current plaza and the recent zoning committee meeting.

We realize that change is inevitable in our neighborhood, but would like to think that a compromise could be reached with reps from CP Reit/Weston that minimizes the impact on the southeast corner of the plaza next to residential homes. Thank you for your work in this regard – it is certainly appreciated.

Mike & Dianne"

Thanks

Mabel was reunited with her sister last night and back home with her foster mom Michelle.

Re: Property Matter

"Ms. Lancaster,

Many thanks for your immediate reply. And you were correct (and carry some clout!)

In fact, the lawn was cleaned up today and prepared for what I assume will be fresh sod.

Thank you to you and Julie.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. And stay cool!
